Foundation Grants out over $93,000 at recent Grants Ceremony Publish Date: 4/9/2009
Local foundation hands out $93,396 in grants LONGMONT — The Longmont Community Foundation distributed $93,396 in grants during its annual awards breakfast Wednesday morning.
“We’re just very fortunate to be part of a community that’s got a rich history of generosity and giving,” said LCF board director Tom Chapman. Grants, ranging from $500 to $5,000, were awarded to 53 nonprofits to fund public awareness campaigns, staff development and technology needs. Additional grants were handed out to a select number of nonprofits whose needs did not fit into one of those categories. One of those was a $5,000 grant for the St. Vrain Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement program. “Now I’m going to be able to do a summer program,” said Karen Hunter, St. Vrain MESA coordinator, adding that the grant will fund camps for MESA students. Hopes Float, a nonprofit that provides fishing and boating for the handicapped and elderly, will use its $3,000 grant to finance trips and buy machinery, said the organization’s president Jesse Adams. “The grant helps a lot,” Adams said. “We’re currently working on getting some specialized fishing equipment for the disabled.” Despite a flailing economy, LCF executive director Eric Hozempa said the foundation was able to meet most funding requests. A total of 61 applications were received by the Dec. 1 deadline, and all but eight received partial or full funding. The LCF board voted in January to dip into the foundation’s principal to maintain community grant funding. Source: Times-Call, 05.13.08.09, Magdalena Wegrzyn
